Foreword

The authors of this book strike me as doers, out to change the world – to make it truly a kinder, gentler place by educating toward core values. This book, part of the nationwide Words Can Heal initiative, is an amazing project. I am honored to be associated with it.

As an author, I am acutely sensitive to the power of words. I believe the ability to communicate in spoken and written form is a gift from on high. Our job is to take advantage of the gift and not abuse the privilege.

When working on the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, I am often struck by the positive power of a good word spoken at just the right time. Encouragement, inspiration, and support to turn one's life around, to try harder, or to achieve the next goal might come from a family member, clergy person, or teacher; it could also come from a business colleague or classmate, even a stranger. By thinking and speaking well of others, each of us becomes the catalyst for feeling good about ourselves, fostering joy in someone else, and promoting amazing achievements in our society.

Unfortunately, the opposite is also true – accentuate the negative about others, tell them something negative to their face,or gossip about them, and you've got yourself one destructive, hurtful, mean, unhappy formula. Spread a bad word – even if it ’s true – and you demean and diminish individuals and communities.

That's why this book has such tremendous potential: It offers a how-to guide for watching our mouths and our ears. It's certainly a challenge. The authors emphasize that we've got to take it one day at a time. Once we all learn the value of ethical speech and practice it, the prize will be improved relationships – in our personal lives and throughout our country.
